What is the Alexander technique
The technique is a way of bringing ourselves into better balance, using less effort in everything we do.
This often has the effect of reducing or avoiding many types of pain, improving performance in all activities and helping us handle the demands of modern life more easily!
It was developed by F.M. Alexander, a Shakespearean recitor and actor. He discovered that the way he used his body whilst reciting made him lose his voice. As he worked out a way of stopping the bad habits in the way he used himself whilst speaking, he realised that the process he used brought about a general improvement of co-ordination and balance which he could teach to others.
His technique has been taught in the UK for over 100 years. There are many teacher training schools offering 3 year full time courses to those wishing to train to teach and also over 850 qualified teachers in this country.
The technique is taught in many of the worlds leading performing arts institutions, is used by many of todays musicians, sports people and actors.
A lot of people come to the technique because of back pain, RSI or other medical conditions. The technique has proved very effective in helping people to manage these conditions, reduce the symptoms or even become totally free from them. For details of medical research, go to www.stat.org.uk
